Hello world! Nari’s first blog post07th May 2014
Wow! I could never have imagined that my childhood experiences would impact so greatly on my future.
Coming from a family with a history of genetic deafness, I guess you could say I grew up in unusual circumstances. Unlike her siblings, who were deaf from birth, my mother’s hearing loss was a progressive one, becoming profoundly deaf in my childhood years. During this time, she found many sounds, particularly music, irritating – and sometimes painful. So, my family would regularly watch TV on mute, and very little music was played in the home. Having said that, I gained some wonderful skills – my mother and my grandmother taught me to lipread. Comes in handy at times!
Fast forward to my teenage years, when an Aunt took me to see the Puccini opera ‘La Boheme’ performed in Brisbane, Australia. It was the first live performance I had ever attended, and it was a deeply formative experience that was to shape my destiny. Having never heard singing or music like that before, I felt inspired (perhaps even compelled) to find a way that my family, and others who are deaf, could share in that same emotion that I had experienced during that live performance.
In 2004, I founded accessibility company Captioning Studio with Alex French, and we had a powerful mission – to completely revolutionise accessible technology in as many areas as possible, including the performing arts. And these days, our technology is used around the world.
With this obsession for accessibility, we began to broaden our horizons and think about accessibility more generally for everyone, no matter their abilities or disabilities. And this has led us to create Peepable – a video search engine that can make content from right across the net discoverable and shareable.
I’m grateful to all those who have believed in Alex and me, and our vision, who have put their faith in us to make this dream a reality, and who have supported us to develop the Peepable beta to share with the world.
And now we hope Peepable changes your world!
So, let’s get Peeping!
